Jan Nijman is a geographer and writer. He has lived and traveled around the world for his own research, and to lecture by invitation for select international audiences. Jan’s main interests are in ancient and contemporary cities, human geography, and geopolitics, with regional expertise in Asia, Europe, and North America. He authored over a hundred scholarly articles and seven books, including the leading college text in the United States on world regional geography, a biography of Miami (for which he received the Jackson Book Prize), and a volume on Amsterdam’s famed historic center. He was a longtime member of National Geographic’s illustrious Committee for Research and Exploration, supporting research, conservation, and exploration around the globe. He is Professor Emeritus in Geography at the University of Amsterdam, and currently holds a Distinguished University Professorship at Georgia State University. He is a former Guggenheim Fellow. A native of the Netherlands, Jan currently lives in Amsterdam and Atlanta.
