Alec Murphy

Geographer Alexander (Alec) Murphy is the author of more than 100 articles and several books on political, cultural, and environmental topics. A long-standing member of the geography faculty at the University of Oregon and long-time champion of geographic education, he has won both of the university’s highest teaching awards. Research, lecturing, and travel have taken him to more than 100 countries on six continents. He is passionate about sharing insights and ideas with fellow travelers while exploring planet Earth’s diverse mix of places, cultures, and natural landscapes.

Alec is a Past President of the Association of American Geographers and current Senior Vice-President of the American Geographical Society. In 2011 he was elected to membership in the Academia Europaea, and in 2014 he received the Association of American Geographers’ Lifetime Achievement Award. Alec holds a bachelor’s degree in archaeology from Yale University, a law degree from the Columbia University School of Law, and a Ph.D. in geography from the University of Chicago.
